WordPress to React Website Redesign: Method and Preserved SEO

Your WordPress site takes three seconds to load. The admin is sluggish, the responsive theme breaks on mobile, and every plugin update gives you cold sweats. You no longer dare to edit a page for fear of breaking everything, and your provider's last intervention cost you 400 euros for a basic security update. These symptoms are textbook signs of a WordPress site that has aged too fast, and the issue is rarely your content: it is the technical stack that slows everything else down.
The good news is that a redesign does not mean starting from zero. With a clean audit and a structured migration to a modern stack (React + Vite + SSG), you regain speed, security and editing confidence, without sacrificing your existing search rankings or your domain name.
The 5 signs that your WordPress site needs a redesign
First signal: LCP above 3 seconds on PageSpeed Insights. Beyond that threshold, Google actively downranks your pages and 40 % of visitors leave before seeing the first screen. Second signal: plugins are outdated or unmaintained. Every abandoned plugin becomes a security vulnerability. Half of all WordPress compromises come from an outdated plugin. Third signal: responsive behaviour is broken on modern screen sizes, often because the theme predates 2020 and has never been tested on current formats.
Fourth signal: the WordPress admin is slow, sometimes taking 10 seconds to load a listing page, often because of a database saturated with accumulated revisions and background analytics plugins. Fifth signal, the most telling one: you are afraid to edit your own pages. If touching the header can break the footer, if disabling a plugin triggers a white screen of death, then your site has become a house of cards rather than a working tool.
Why React + SSG instead of a new WordPress build
Rebuilding a clean WordPress means signing up for the same recurring costs. Plan for 30 to 60 euros per month for managed hosting to avoid downtime, 50 to 100 euros per month for plugin maintenance and security updates, plus an average of 200 to 500 euros per year in emergency interventions. Total: around 1 500 euros per year, whether you have traffic or not.
A React + Vite stack with static site generation (SSG) flips the equation. Hosting is free on Vercel or Netlify at marketing site volumes. There are no third-party plugins to update, and therefore no vulnerabilities to monitor. And performance is typically 5 to 10 times higher: a static site loads in under one second, where a standard WordPress site takes two to four seconds. The annual recurring cost drops below 100 euros, and your site no longer has a server-side attack surface.
The migration method that preserves your SEO
The number one risk in a poorly managed redesign is losing the Google rankings accumulated over the years. The method comes down to four steps. First, a complete audit of existing URLs via Screaming Frog or Search Console: list every indexed page, their traffic and their backlinks. Next, a mapping to the new routes of the React application: every legacy URL points to its modern equivalent, or to the nearest page on the same topic.
Third step, configure permanent 301 redirects in the vercel.json file of the new project. The 301 passes 90 to 99 % of the SEO value to the new URL and tells Google to definitively replace the old one in its index. Fourth step, after launch: resubmit the sitemap in Search Console, monitor the coverage report for 4 to 6 weeks and fix any remaining 404s. Done properly, this migration preserves the entirety of the existing search rankings. I have measured less than 5 % transitional loss on the cases I have handled.
Case study — Rentaloc redesign (Savigny-sur-Orge)
Robin Desrame runs Rentaloc, a vehicle rental agency in Savigny-sur-Orge (91). His old site had become unreadable on mobile, sluggish on desktop, and the admin no longer met modern requirements (iframe booking, WhatsApp integration, quote forms). The chosen stack: React 19 + Vite 7 + vite-react-ssg for pre-rendering, Vercel deployment, quote forms wired into Supabase. Mobile Lighthouse score targeted at 100/100/100/100, rentaloc.fr domain and main URLs preserved to protect local SEO. Full technical breakdown is available on the Rentaloc page in the portfolio.
How much it costs and how long it takes
A redesign costs in practice 30 to 50 % less than a new build of equivalent complexity, because content, structure and visuals are reused. For a 5 to 15 page marketing site, plan from 1 200 €. The final price depends on the number of pages to rebuild, design complexity, third-party integrations (forms, booking, payment, multilingual) and the volume of 301 redirects to manage: tailored quote within 48 hours after a free initial call.
For a full breakdown of every service and price range, see the Services & Pricing page.
On timelines, plan 4 to 6 weeks for a standard marketing site, 8 to 10 weeks for a site with operational features (booking, quote requests, client area). Typical schedule: 1 week of audit and specification, 2 to 4 weeks of development, 1 week of cross-testing and SEO migration, 1 week of delivery and training. If your WordPress site shows three of the five signs listed above, the return on investment of a redesign is measured in months, not years.
